Richard Osora returns to carpenting

This is the personal story of Richard Osoro, a 67 year old man from Ngunya village within Ugunja Sub-County, one of the treatment areas covered by the Community Based Rehabilitation Program (CBR).

Richard was enrolled into the CBR program in the year 2014 during a medical camp held at Ambira Primary School by CBR International.

He was diagnosed of cancer of the bone (osteosarcoma) in the year 2003. This had spread to the level above his left knee and led to the limb being amputated. His life drastically changed leading to abandonment by his wife. He became destitute since he could not continue with his carpentry work and only relied on relatives for his daily meals and upkeep, his movement was limited and his quality of life drastically reduced.

CBR International prescribed an above knee prosthesis to rehabilitate the client.  They therefore purchased the prosthesis from Nyabondo Rehabilitation Center and took care of all the costs attached to it.

“I could not even attend functions like funerals, weddings or even access other social amenities when I did not have this artificial limb,” Richard says.

“Right now, all these are possible and I can also go to my work shop and do my carpentry work together with my son who I have been training to take over when I am too old to work”, he says with enthusiasm.

Richard has requested for a boost from CBR International to enable him acquire more materials so that his business can grow.

Richard Osoro is terug timmerman

Dit is het verhaal van Richard Osoro, een man van 67 jaar oud uit het dorp Ngunya in Ugunja Sub-County. Dit is één van de gebieden waar het Community Based Rehabilitation Program (CBR) actief is.

Richard werd opgenomen in het CBR programma in 2014 tijdens een medische screening in Ambira Primary School.

In 2003 had hij de diagnose gekregen van een botkanker (osteosarcoma), wat zich uitbreidde tot boven de linker knie. Hierdoor moest zijn linker bovenbeen geamputeerd worden. Zijn leven veranderde op een drastische manier, en had zelfs tot gevolg dat zijn echtgenote bij hem wegging. Hij werd helemaal hulpbehoevend omdat hij niet verder kon gaan met zijn werk als timmerman. Hij moest maaltijden van familie aanvaarden, en zijn beweeglijkheid was zo gereduceerd dat hij geen levenskwaliteit meer ervaarde.

CBR International schreef hem een prothese voor tot boven de knie, om de revalidatie op te starten.  Dit werd gemaakt in Nyabondo Rehabilitation Center, en CBR International nam alle kosten op zich..

“Ik kon zelfs niet meer naar begrafenissen gaan, of deelnemen aan huwelijksfeesten en andere sociale activiteiten” zegt hij. “Nu echter, met mijn prothese, is dat allemaal terug mogelijk. Ik kan zelfs terug naar mijn werk gaan. Ik timmer nu samen met mijn zoon, die ik zo kan opleiden voor het geval ik moet stoppen”.

Richard vroeg nog ondersteuning van CBR International om meer materialen aan te kunnen kopen en zijn zaak te doen groeien.

Voici l’histoire personnelle de Richard OSORO. Richard est un vieil homme âgé de 67 ans qui habite Ngyunga, village du comté de Ugunja qui fait partie d’une zone couverte par le programme de Réhabilitation à Base Communautaire (RBC).

Richard a été intégré au programme en 2014 lors de la tenue d’un camp médicalisé par CBR International à l’école primaire de Ambira.

En 2003 déjà, il a été diagnostiqué chez Richard un ostéosarcome (cancer des os). Le cancer s’est propagé au-dessus de son genou gauche ce qui a amené l’amputation de sa jambe.

Ceci a radicalement changé son existence.
Sa femme l’a quitté, il a perdu son emploi de charpentier et est uniquement aidé par ses proches en ce qui concerne les activités du quotidien. Depuis son amputation, les mouvements de Richard sont limités et sa qualité de vie a fortement diminué.

CBR International a préconisé une prothèse montant au-dessus du genou à son client. La prothèse a été commandée et achetée au Centre de Réhabilitation de Nyabondo et CBR International a pris en charge tous les frais la concernant.

Richard affirme avec enthousiasme :

« Je ne pourrais pas assister à des mariages, funérailles ou tout autre rencontres sociales si je n’avais pas cette prothèse. Maintenant tout ceci est possible et je peux même aller travailler comme charpentier. Je suis pour ça accompagné de mon fils que j’ai formé pour continuer mon entreprise quand je serai trop vieux »

Richard a même demandé de l’aide supplémentaire à CBR International pour lui permettre d’acheter plus de matériel et ainsi faire grandir son entreprise.
