Clinton Omondi suffers less from his epileptic seizures

Clinton’s father, Mr. Omondi had just cleared doing some cleaning to his cow shed and was having a cup of porridge when a rehabilitation team from Matibabu Foundation accompanied by occupational therapy students of CBR Team International paid him a follow up visit at his home. Clinton lives with both his parents in Doho village, in Ugenya sub county, Siaya County. By the time of our arrival, Clintons mother had just left home for the market to sell some vegetables from her kitchen garden to get some money to support the family.

Clinton, now 20 years old is a CP client with spastic limbs with episodes of convulsions. His family who had minimal knowledge on his condition could not do much and relied on spiritual intervention having believed this condition was as a result of witchcraft. Latter on the family was introduced to anti- convulsion medication by a community health volunteer. However, due to the cost involved in buying the drugs, Clinton’s family could not afford and hence treatment was never initiated.

Clinton was introduced to the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) project in July 2014 by a community health volunteer from Doho Village. This was during a home visit that was done by the rehabilitation team and the community health volunteer from the village. During the visit, Clinton was enrolled into our rehabilitation program, where medication to control convulsion was prescribed and recommendations for physiotherapy done. Clinton was also put on regular follow ups.

Clinton’s father, who is now 55 years old was evidently delighted as he described to the team how the life of Clinton and the family as a whole has changed since their encounter with the CBR team in 2014. His story narrates some of these as the positive changes noticed so far; Clinton has reduced episodes of convulsions from two to three daily episodes of convulsions to once a month, reduced muscles spasticity and contractures as a result of regularly physiotherapy. Mr. Omondi explained to the team how the knowledge transfer from the CBR workers has improved their understanding of Clinton’s condition and their capacity to provide care and continuity of the therapy at home.

The family has also been able to team up with other community members with similar challenges and have formed a support group where they meet periodically to share and find solutions to problems related to disability.

Clinton woont bij zijn beide ouders in Doho village, in Ugenya subcounty, Siaya County. Op het moment van het bezoek was de mama naar de markt om groenten te verkopen die ze zelf had gekweekt, om zo wat geld te verdienen en de dagelijkse kosten te kunnen betalen.

Clinton is nu 20 jaar en heeft CP (hersenverlamming) met spastische armen en benen, en regelmatige epileptische aanvallen. Zijn familie had een beperkte kennis over zijn toestand en kon niets anders doen dan vertrouwen op spirituele interventies gezien ze dachten dat hij behekst was. Later is de familie door een gemeenschapswerker in contact gekomen met medicatie tegen epilepsie maar door de hoge kost is deze medicatie nooit opgestart.

Clinton kwam in het Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) project terecht in juli 2014 via dezelfde gemeenschapwerker uit Doho Village. Dit gebeurde na een huisbezoek door het revalidatieteam van Matibabu en CBR Team international. Tijdens dit bezoek werd Clinton ingeschreven in het programma, waardoor hij medicatie tegen epilepsie voorgeschreven kreeg en revalidatiebehandelingen aan huis. Clinton wordt regelmatig opgezocht voor opvolging.

De vader van Clinton, die nu 55 jaar is, was natuurlijk in de wolken, zoals hij zelf vertelt hoe het leven van Clinton en zijn gezin veranderd is sinds de ontmoeting in 2014. Zijn verhaal gaat over de positieve dingen die zijn opgetreden sindsdien: Clinton heeft nu slechts één epileptische aanval per maand tov. 2 à 3 per dag vroeger. De spasticiteit en de contracturen zijn duidelijk verminderd door de behandelingen aan huis. Mr. Omondi legt uit hoe de kennisoverdracht van het CBR team de ouders heeft geholpen in het begrijpen van Clinton’s situatie, waardoor ze nu beter voor hem kunnen zorgen.

De familie is er ook in geslaagd om met andere mensen in het dorp contact te leggen die gelijkaardige problemen meemaken. Ze hebben een groep gevormd die af en toe samenkomt, om samen oplossingen te zoeken voor problemen die te maken hebben met een handicap.
