Jabaal and Griffin can walk again

Caroline Owino was just preparing the lunch time meal to Jabaal, Griffin and other siblings when we visited her at her matrimonial home in Ywaya village, Ugunja Sub County. Mama Jabaal as she is famously known lives with other household members in this homestead.

Jabaal and Griffin are 12 and 9 Years old respectively and both had bilateral neglected club foot. The deformity was not detected early enough for timely intervention as both Jabaal and Griffin were born at home and no health care worker could detect this musculoskeletal deformity in time. This led to delayed intervention and Jabaal’s mother had to move from one hospital to the other seeking medical /surgical intervention. Caroline had to live with the negative social impacts of her sons’ condition as she was many a times humiliated and seen as a bad omen to the family and community. Many occasions she was stigmatized for giving birth to children with disability. At some point she had to move out of her matrimonial home and seek refuge from her parents’ home due to the increased cases of stigma and humiliation both from the immediate family members and the community. Caroline reported that at the hospital they tried to intervene with serial casting but did not realize a good outcome.

Caroline met with the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Project of Matibabu Foundation – Kenya (MFK) and CBR Team International in July 2014 during a medical camp in Tingare Dispensary, where Jabaal and Griffin were included in the CBR list for follow ups and referred for surgical intervention. Through the CBR project Jabaal and Griffin have benefited from continuous post-surgery follow ups.

Jabaal and Griffin were evidently delighted to see us during this visit as the ever shy Jabaal described to us how he is looking forward to play soccer with his school mates when he finally get full recovery. Caroline on the other hand was so grateful for our intervention now that she does not have to carry both Jabaal and Griffin to school as they are now able to walk to school. This has given her a lot of space and time to concentrate on other things to the benefit of her family. The 37 year old, a mother of 4 described how her life has changed since her encounter with the CBR-MFK team at the medical camp. She says, she is able to do her garden work and concentrate on her small scale business. She also says this also changed the perception of the community and family members about the disability of her children. She is also an active member of Tingare Support Group for persons with disability.

Jabaal en Griffin kunnen weer lopen.

Caroline Owino was juist lunch aan het voorbereiden voor Jabaal, Griffin en de andere kinderen toen we haar bezochten in haar huis in Ywaya, Ugunja Sub County. Mama Jabaal, zoals ze bekend staat, woont daar samen met haar andere huisgenoten.

Jabaal en Griffin zijn respectievelijk 12 en 9 jaar oud, en alletwee hebben ze klompvoetjes aan de beide zijden die nooit erkend zijn geweest. De misvorming is nooit op tijd ontdekt geweest zodat ze nog eenvoudig konden behandeld worden, omdat Jabaal en Griffin thuis geboren zijn, en geen enkele gezondheidswerker kon ze daarom vroeg genoeg opsporen. Dit leidde tot een vertraagde interventie en Jabaal’s mama moest van het ene ziekenhuis naar het andere gaan op zoek naar medische hulp. Caroline moest leven met de negatieve sociale impact die het gevolg was van de aandoening van haar kinderen, en ze is om die reden vele malen vernederd en al seen slecht voorteken gezien door haar familie en gemeenschap. Verschillende keren is ze gestigmatiseerd omdat ze kinderen met een handicap ter wereld had gebracht. Op een zeker moment moest ze zelfs uit het ouderlijk huis weggaan door onophoudelijk discriminerend gedrag van haar directe familieleden. Caroline vertelt dat ze in het ziekenhuis met gipsbehandelingen de voetjes hebben proberen recht krijgen, maat dat is niet gelukt.

Caroline kwam in aanraking met het Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Project van Matibabu Foundation – Kenya (MFK) en CBR Team International in juli 2014 tijdens een ‘medical camp’ in Tingare Dispensary, waar Jabaal en Griffin in het programma geïncludeerd werden, en een verwijzing kregen voor een operatie. Via het CBR project hebben ze kunne genieten van postchirurgische opvolging.

Jabaal en Griffin waren natuurlijk enthoesiast van ons te zien tijdens het volgende bezoek: Jabaal die anders zo verlegen is, keek al uit naar de voetbalmatch die hij ging kunnen spelen met de vriendjes als hij volledige hersteld is ! Caroline aan de andere kant was dankbaar voor het feit dat ze de 2 jongens niet meer naar school moest dragen gezien ze nu kunnen lopen. Nu kan ze haar tijd in veel andere dingen steken: groeten kweken en kleine handel drijven… Ze zegt dat ook de houding van de gemeenschap veranderd is. Ze is nu lid van de oudergroep van kinderen met een handicap in Tingare .
